A Prior Information Notice (PIN) published on 24 February 2025 indicates that the department is allocating £10 million to explore and implement AI solutions aimed at improving its services.

The Nexus AI initiative is designed to identify, develop, and test proof-of-concept AI tools to address various operational challenges within the DWP. The focus areas include machine learning, generative AI, natural language processing, and expert systems. Once validated, these tools will be integrated into the department's operations to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

The DWP's AI & Innovation Directorate is seeking partnerships with suppliers capable of providing a range of AI-related services.

These services encompass the implementation and support of AI systems, project lifecycle evaluation, risk management, governance, and the development of value frameworks. Additionally, the initiative emphasizes the importance of sustainable, ethical, and human-centred AI applications, aligning with the principles outlined in the AI Playbook for the UK Government.

Potential suppliers are encouraged to prepare for the forthcoming procurement process, with the Invitation to Tender expected to be published in May 2025. The DWP plans to award the contract between June and July 2025. Interested parties must register through the Artificial Intelligence Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS) framework (RM6200) to participate.

This strategic move by the DWP reflects a broader governmental commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to enhance public services while ensuring responsible and ethical AI deployment.
